Tim Truman and Son Bring "Hawken" to Baltimore Comic-Con

Timothy Truman Brings the Weird West to 2011 Baltimore Comic-Con

Legendary comics artist and writer Timothy Truman will give East Coast fans an exclusive first look at artwork, covers, and designs for Hawken, his highly-anticipated western horror series, at this year's Baltimore Comic-Con , August 20-21, 2011, at the Baltimore Convention Center , 1 West Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Co-created with his 28-year-old son, writer Benjamin Truman, the new project tells the tale of ghost-haunted pistolero Kitchell Hawken and his blood-drenched vendetta against the men who scalped and tortured him then left him for dead. The first issue ships in November from IDW Publishing.

Renowned for his work on such titles as hard-hitting action titles as Grimjack, Scout, Wilderness, Hawkworld, Turok, Jonah Hex, and Dark Horse Comics' Conan, Timothy is hardly a stranger to the BCC. "Baltimore is by far my favorite convention every year," Truman says. "I attended my first show several years ago, after I decided to take the day off and check it out as a 'civilian.' I was immediately impressed. Baltimore Comic-Con made me feel like a 'fan' again. I haven't missed a show since." To mark the Baltimore preview, Tim and Ben are preparing limited edition Hawken BCC t-shirts and prints especially for the appearance.

In his featured blog for the pop-culture site The Morton Report, journalist Bill Baker gave readers a taste of what to expect from the new tale:

"Over the course of his long and storied career, writer-artist Timothy Truman has had brushes with all manner of killers and antiheroes. But his latest encounter with the darker side of humanity, in the supernaturally-charged Western miniseries features Hawken, a character that he freely admits is perhaps the worst of the lot.

"According to Truman, the titular character, Kitchell Hawken 'has been many things in his day: Scout, tracker, trader, scalp-hunter, raider, hired gun.... But mostly, he's been a nasty son-of-a-bitch.'

"Each issue of the six-part tale follows the aged Hawken as he wreaks bloody vengeance upon the very men he used to work for, a cartel of corrupt politicians and arms merchants called the Tucson Ring. Along the way readers learn more about Hawken's reason for turning on his former employers and the many horrors that the haunted gunman has committed over the course of a blood-soaked life.

"And just to be clear, 'haunted' literally describes Hawken's situation, as the remorseless killer's accompanied throughout his vendetta by the ghost of every person he's killed, all unwilling companions forced by a curse to assist the gunslinger with his vengeance.

"Truman, who's become known for his ability to portray unlikable loners in convincing manner, freely admits, 'Folks would be hard-pressed to find a character as ruthless as Kit Hawken. He has good reasons for his rampage, and believe me, a rampage it is. For once, the bad guys have truly messed with the wrong man.'

"And while anyone might be hard-pressed to describe the proceedings as family fare, it is, in fact, a family affair. That's because Tim Truman's creative partner on this project is none other than Ben Truman, his son.

"Ben, who's scripting the series, works as a teacher in Tucson, AZ. As he describes it, the character and his sordid tale arose almost by chance during one of his parents' visits to the area last year. The younger Truman recalled that 'while driving through Crater Park I asked Dad if he's ever seen any accounts where a man had survived a scalping. Somehow, that kicked it off.

"'Hawken grew out of the landscapes of each new place we visited: His name in Flagstaff, his past in Bisbee, the curse in Tempe, his vendetta in Tombstone. By the time we left San Xavier Mission, the first issue was plotted.'

"The elder Truman gained widespread notoriety with his first two major efforts, Scout and .Grimjack These comics were some of the most critically lauded independent comics of the '80s, fan-favorites that catapulted Truman and his various creative partners into the upper echelons of the mainstream comics industry."

Each of the six issues of Hawken will cost $3.99 and contain 32 pages printed in antiqued duo-tone. The book joins such popular IDW titles as 30 Days of Night, Hasbro's Transformers and G.I. JOE, Paramount's Star Trek, Toho's Godzilla, HBO's True Blood, and the BBC's Dr. Who.

Ballots for 2011 Harvey Awards Now Available

2011 HARVEY NOMINATION BALLOTS AVAILABLE!

SCOTT KURTZ TO HOST HARVEY AWARDS!

BALTIMORE, MD (February 3, 2011) -- The Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con are proud to present the official Nomination Ballot for this year's Harvey Awards. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry's most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art.

Ballots can be downloaded from HarveyAwards.org and completed forms can be e-mailed to harveyballots@hotmail.com. Ballots are due for submission by Monday, March 28, 2011. In addition to being available on the website, ballots will be sent to all major publishers and distributed at comic conventions. We look forward to your participation and input in this process, and we look forward to seeing you at the Baltimore Comic-Con and the Harvey Awards.

Returning for his third consecutive Harvey Awards, Scott Kurtz will be the Master of Ceremonies for the awards banquet, to be held Saturday, August 20, 2011 as part of the Baltimore Comic-Con. "We are thrilled that Scott agreed to come back to Baltimore and help to make the Harvey Awards ceremony as fun and exciting as the last few years have been!" said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Scott Kurtz has been creating his own comic strips since he got hooked on Garfield in the 4th grade. In 1998, his comic strip, PvP, debuted on the world wide web (pvponline.com) with 700 daily readers. Over the last 10 years, PvP has grown into a genuine Internet phenomenon, growing in readership to an estimated 150,000 readers per day, a monthly title from Image comics, winning a Harvey Award in 2010 for Best Online Comics Work, and winning the Eisner Award for best digital comic in 2006. Scott co-wrote the book "How To Make Webcomics" and co-founded webcomics.com to help assist others in forging their own creative destinies.

Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. The Harvey Awards are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

This year's Baltimore Comic-Con will be held August 20-21, 2011. Convention hours are Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM. The ceremony and banquet for the Harvey Awards will be held Saturday night, August 20. Additional details about the Harvey Awards and the awards ceremony will be released over the next few months.

Baltimore Comic-Con Thanks Fans and Makes 2011 Announcement

Press release:

Thanks for a Great 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con!

Join us again August 20-21, 2011!

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - November 12, 2010 - They had started lining up before dawn. By the time the doors opened at 10:00 AM (and the oppressive August heat had already taken hold), the line was wrapped around the side of the Baltimore Convention Center and snaked across the street. These fans knew something big was happening, and they wanted to be among the first in the door. Soon, they'd be face to face with some of the biggest names in the comic book industry - as well as plenty of promising talent.

It was the 11th annual Baltimore Comic-Con, and the weekend ended up being a phenomenal success.

Of course, the success wouldn't be possible without the hard work of a lot of people - and it's time to say a big "Thank You!" to everyone involved. Special thanks go to SPAWN creator Todd McFarlane, who joined us on Saturday August 28 and was, as expected, a major hit with the fans. And to our guests, exhibitors, retailers, partners, and especially the fans who continue to join us each year - THANK YOU. Without you, Baltimore Comic-Con simply wouldn't happen.

With the 11th annual Comic-Con a great success, the team is already thinking of ways to make 2011 an even bigger year for comics fans. On the calendar for August 20-21, 2011, next year's Comic-Con will feature guests you won't want to miss - we've already lined up Frank Cho (New Ultimates), David Finch (Batman: The Dark Knight), Barry Kitson (Iron Man 2.0), David Petersen (Mouse Guard), Brandon Peterson (Ultimate Extinction), and Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo).

Comic-Con promoter Marc Nathan couldn't be happier with 2010's Comic-Con, but he knows the only way from here is up. "We were thrilled with the show in 2010. My team and I had a great time putting on the show, and the feedback from our partners, guests, and, most notably, the fans that came to the show has been great. Each year, we find new ways to make Comic-Con bigger and more exciting," Marc said. "2011 is going to be a very big year."

That's an exciting prospect, because this year's convention was bigger than it's ever been. Attendance was up 20% from last year, the costume contest (in its second year) was so big we had to knock down a wall to make room (where's the Hulk when you need him?), and aspiring artists packed the room for a highly successful Artists' Workshop led by comic book legends Klaus Janson and Howard Chaykin. For our fifth year running, we hosted the Harvey Awards, and we're already looking forward to our sixth year!

We can only imagine what's in store for next year, so mark your calendars now! Details on guests, the Harvey Awards, industry exclusives, and programming leading up to the show can always be found at our website, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and ComicSpace pages.

Giordano, who passed away in early 2010, was part of Hero Initiative's Board of Directors. He was also a legendary artist, a guiding force at Charlton Comics and DC Comics for many years, a mentor to his colleagues, and a friend to all who knew him. His legacy epitomizes the caring and commitment Hero Initiative strives to achieve. In his honor, The Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award will recognize one person in comics each year who has demonstrated the generosity and integrity Dick brought to the charity, and to the comic book community at large.

With over seventy five years of cumulative experience in the comic book industry, Klaus Janson and Howard Chaykin are all-too-well-versed in the ins and outs of making a career in our inkstained - and now, with all that digital stuff, carpal tunneled - business. For the past few years, Klaus and Howard have been conducting an Artist's Workshop for Marvel, offering invaluable insights, gleaned from those decades of experience, on narrative, storytelling, page design, and career management.

They've developed a fluid and comprehensive take on the inside game played by successful cartoonists - and a series of direct and vital techniques intended to drag newer talents out of a hobby and into a profession - without ever losing the joy all of us experience when we ply our craft.

Klaus and Howard have taken their seminar on the road to the renowned Savannah College of Art & Design, to great acclaim from students and faculty alike, and now they're bringing a customized version of the workshop to the 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con. On Saturday, August 28th, from 1pm to 4pm, Messrs. To register for this very special class, please call our host store, Cards, Comics, & Collectibles @ 410-526-7410. The cost for this professional seminar is $75. Chris Yura and "Two Italian Guys" at Baltimore Comic-Con

Two Italian Guys Comic Book Exclusive at Baltimore Comic-Con

Free signed, numbered mini-print with book purchase

Baltimore, Maryland - August 20, 2010 – From the migration, to the mob, to marinara, it’s the Italian-American experience like you’ve never seen it before! Recently released in May, indie comic Two Italian Guys is already generating a buzz with an Italian market-themed booth that is not to be missed.

Lucky fans will be able to get a free signed, limited convention exclusive mini-print as well as a Two Italian Guys novelty stress ball with a book purchase at the August 28-29, 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con. Creator and cartoonist Chris Yura will sign, number, and personalize each print, which is limited to only 100 copies.

"I still have a flyer from the first big comic show I went to over 15 years ago, and that inspired me to create something special to share with the Baltimore fans," said Yura. "We look forward to the Baltimore Comic-Con all year, and this souvenir print captures some of the excitement to enjoy long after this great weekend ends."

Combining a long running graphic novel with a short story format, the main tale of Two Italian Guys follows two first generation brothers who think they deserve more than dead end jobs and, if they ignore their father’s advice, may have found the answer. Short stories starring cantankerous TV chef Lou Peppino and his crew of talking veggies will have readers cooking Italian in no time…if Lou doesn’t get kicked off the air first! Wittily strung together with a hearty helping of mob hits and pop culture references, Two Italian Guys has a little something for everyone. Two Italian Guys (38 full-color pages, premium hardcover, retail price $12.95) is available for purchase direct from the publisher at http://www.mangiaindustry.com/ and at Amazon.com.

The eleventh annual Baltimore Comic-Con will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 28-29, 2010 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Convention hours are Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM.
