Captain America created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby
“Winter in America” Part 1
Captain America is a Marvel Comics superhero created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Captain America was Steve Rogers, a frail young man who reached the peak of human perfection via the experimental “super soldier” serum.
He first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover dated: March 1941), which was published by Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. After Captain America Comics was canceled in 1949, there was a revival of the series from 1953 to 1954. Captain America fully returned to modern comic books in The Avengers #4 (cover dated: March 1964).
Steve Rogers/Captain America embarks on a new beginning again with a relaunch of his title series. The new Captain America comic book series is written by Ta-Nehisi Coates; drawn by Leinil Francis Yu (pencils) and Gerry Alanguilan (inks); colored by Sunny Gho; and lettered by Joe Caramagna. In the new series, Captain America faces an existential crises as he wrestles with how people view and perceive him in the wake of the Hydra Captain America impostor that briefly took over the world as an authoritarian dictator.
Captain America #1 opens in the Sayan Mountains of Russia months earlier. There, something new is emerging from the ashes of Hydra. In the present day, Captain America and the Winter Solider battle a small army of men who resemble Cap's old adversary, Nuke. They are killing civilians in a mass shooting event in and around the National Mall in Washington D.C. As Captain America battles to save lives and stop these killers, he will also have to face another harsh reality. No one really trusts him anymore... even the people who should know him best.
I would not call Captain America #1 2018 a great comic book, but it is the best written Captain America comic book that I have read in ages. Ta-Nehisi Coates cleverly uses the battle at the National Mall's aftermath to depict not so much Captain America in crisis, but the Sentinel of Liberty as man at odds with the people, places, and nation he has sworn to protect and to defend. It makes for great reading, because we known this is the true Captain America, but the dramatic tension brought by the distrust of Cap from the other characters makes for some good reading.
Leinil Francis Yu has been a skilled graphical storyteller for over two decades, but his drawing style has taken an ugly turn the last several years – as far as I am concerned. He is better here, and Sunny Gho's evocative colors strengthen how the narrative conveys its ideas and heightens the drama. Letterer Joe Caramagna creates a steady sense of rhythm that paces the narrative flow for both the action scenes and for the character scenes that confront Captain America.
I think Ta-Nehisi Coates will make me a regular Captain America reader for the first time in ages. I think this is the beginning of a good age for Captain America.

Review: Friendly Neighborhood SPIDER-MAN #1
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN No. 1 (2019)

STORY: Tom Taylor
PENCILS: Juann Cabal; Marcelo Ferreira
INKS: Juann Cabal; Roberto Poggi
COLORS: Nolan Woodard; Jim Campbell
LETTERS: VC's Travis Lanham
EDITOR: Nick Lowe
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Akira Yoshida
COVER: Andrew Robinson
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Juann Cabal with Nolan Woodard; Joe Jusko
40pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (March 2019)
Rated “T”
Spider-Man created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee
“Mother of Exile: Part One”
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was a Spider-Man comic book series that ran for twenty-four monthly issues (cover dated: December 2005 to November 2007) and one “Annual.” A new volume of the series recently debuted. The new series is written by Tom Taylor; drawn by Juann Cabal; colored by Nolan Woodard; and lettered by Travis Lanham. Marvel Comics promises that this new series will give readers “the most local Peter Parker ever” (CBR.com; October 5, 2018).
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 opens with Spider-Man saving some neighbors. Peter Parker is doing a lot of that, but his latest neighbor in need, a young woman named Leilani, is in some kind of weird trouble. And the troublemakers hit really hard. Plus, in a second story, Peter's Aunt May is having health issues that she is hiding from her dear nephew.
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has potential. I might keep reading just because of the ending of the first story. The art by Juann Cabal is good, but not great, although it does look pretty under Nolan Woodard's smooth colors. Travis Lanham's steady lettering centers the story and gives Tom Taylor's script a little bite and a little edge which it needs.
There is a second story, which is written by Taylor; drawn by Marcelo Ferreira and Roberto Poggi; colored by Jim Campbell; and lettered by Lanham. As for this story: I don't know why we need an Aunt May health scare arc.

The character first appeared in Marvel Preview #7 (cover dated: Summer 1976), and received a snazzy makeover in 2008, courtesy of writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Rocket Raccoon, or simply “Rocket” is verbose, proactive, and doesn't mind zapping a ray blast in sentient ass.
Rocket Raccoon is the star of his third comic book series, entitled Rocket. It is written by Al Ewing; drawn by Adam Gorham; colored by Michael Garland; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.
Rocket #1 (“The Damsel”) finds Rocket drowning his sorrows at a bar on Digriz. Suddenly, in walks Otta Spice, the former female-in-his-life. She left him, but now, she is back because she needs him. He does not want to help her, but he will – even if it is mission impossible.
Back in 2014, when I read Rocket Raccoon #1 by Skottie Young, I did not like the first 11 pages. However, the second half of that comic book was a blast. I was hoping for something like that with Rocket #1, but it didn't happen. Rocket #1 is a poor comic book.
Marvel Comics currently has a #1 issue problem, and has for the last few years. There are too many of them, especially when it comes to Guardians of the Galaxy. I know that Marvel is merely trying to tap into the sales potential of a hot media property, following the success of the 2014 film, Guardians of the Galaxy, but the number of new titles related to this property seems like early 1990s Marvel overkill. Rocket #1 is an example of a comic book that is either not ready for release or simply should not be published. Rocket #1 is only a little better than recent Marvel #1 issues for Kingpin and Bullseye, which were crummy comics.
I like Mike Mayhew's cover art, and Adam Gorham's interior art is just right... for a better humor comic book than Rocket.

“Vargr”
“James Bond” is a fictional British Secret Service agent created by Ian Fleming, a British writer and novelist. Fleming introduced James Bond in the 1953 novel, Casino Royale, and featured the character in 12 novels and two short-story collections. Of course, most people know Bond because of the long-running James Bond-007 film series, which began with the 1962 film, Dr. No.
After Fleming's death, a number of authors continued to produce James Bond novels, including the recently released Trigger Warning from author Anthony Horowitz. Over the past 50+ years, Bond has made sporadic appearances in comic books. The latest James Bond comic book appears courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment.
James Bond, Volume 1 is written by Warren Ellis, drawn by Jason Masters, colored by Guy Major, and lettered by Simon Bowland. The first story arc is entitled is entitled “Vargr.” According to Ellis, this James Bond comic book series will feature a James Bond that skews closer to the character that appeared in Ian Fleming's writing than in the film series.
James Bond, Volume 1, #1 opens in Helsinki, Finland. There, James Bond-007 is settling a matter concerning 008. Back in London at MI6 headquarters, M (Bond's immediate superior) informs Bond that he must take on a larger workload. That will take him to Berlin and into danger.
When actor Daniel Craig was cast as James Bond around a decade ago, it was announced that the James Bond film series would return to the idea that 007 was a blunt instrument used by the British Secret Service. That was evident in most of Craig's first outing as Bond, 2006's Casino Royale, although the film ultimately returned to the action movie theatrics that have defined the series for most of its existence.
In 22 pages, writer Warren Ellis makes it clear that the James Bond of “Vargr” is not only a blunt instrument, but also is a man who can be both suave and ordinary-like, as necessary. This Bond is also classic and cool, like Sean Connery operating with a jazzy soundtrack in the background. There is, however, also a touch of the edginess found in Richard Stark's Parker.
Jason Masters' art and graphical storytelling deglazes any cinematic sheen from both the subject and the story. With Guy Major's colors, Masters' art does not seek to make this a matter-of-fact Bond, but rather it emphasizes the story and genre as much as it does the famous character.
I highly recommend this to fans of James Bond and to those who have been waiting for a James Bond comic book. I must also note that not only is Moneypenny a Black character (as she is in the current films), but so is M. I'll be waiting in Berlin...

"Joe Jusko: Maelstrom" Available for Pre-Order
Much Anticipated Joe Jusko Sketchbook Announced: Second in a series!
New York, NY- The much anticipated second Joe Jusko Sketchbook from Eva Ink Publishing is in the current/upcoming Diamond Catalogue, and is available for ordering either via Diamond or via Eva Ink Publishing (http://www.evainkartistgroup.com/)
"Joe Jusko: Maelstrom" is a lush 48 page, full color book, and showcases works by Jusko not featured in any other sketchbook or artbook! A great follow up to last year's book "Joe Jusko: Savage Beauty."
Jusko is undoubtedly one of the best known Fantasy, Pin-Up and Comic Artists in the world today. His career has spanned over 30 years, starting with the sale of his very first cover for Heavy Metal Magazine in 1977 at the age of 17. Since graduating that year from NYC's High School of Art & Design, Joe has worked for almost every major comic book publisher, producing hundreds of images for both covers and interiors.
His work has appeared on paperback book covers, calendars, posters, t-shirts, toy packaging and innumerable trading cards, most memorably the multi award winning 1992 Marvel Masterpieces Trading Cards. The popularity of that set has been credited with initiating the painted trading card boom of the 1990's, and led to his groundbreaking 1995 Art of Edgar Rice Burroughs trading cards. Those 125 paintings have made him the most prolific Burroughs artist ever, producing art based on almost every major book by the famed author. He is currently the cover artist for the "John Carter of Mars" series.
In addition to his work at Marvel over the years, Joe has produced art for many other companies and characters, including DC Comics, Crusade Comics, Innovation Comics, Harris Comics, Wildstorm Comics, Top Cow Productions and Byron Preiss Visuals, to name just a few. He has produced storyboards for ad agencies and advertising campaigns for such notable clients as the World Wrestling Federation, where he designed the art for the 1991-1992 Royal Rumbles and Wrestlemania VII.
His recent work includes monthly painted covers for Dynamite Comics' adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' WARLORD OF MARS, covers for VAMPIRELLA and a 4 issue WOLVERINE/HERCULES minis series as well as numerous independent publishers. His 2005 fully painted graphic novel based on Lara Croft, the heroine from the Tomb Raider video game series, won a Certificate of Merit from the prestigious Society of Illustrators, into which he was inducted in 2007. His hardcover "Art of Joe Jusko" book was released by Desperado Publishing in May, 2009 to rave reviews, and "Savage Beauty" his first in a series of hardcover sketchbooks from EvaInk Productions was released as of November 2010. He's currently developing a graphic storytelling property with Steve Niles' (author of "30 Days of Night").
His work has earned him myriad awards and honors, including two "Favorite Painter" Wizard Fan Awards, multiple trading card awards, a Golden Lion Award from the Burroughs Bibliophiles (previous recipients include Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo) and a Chesley Award nomination for best cover in 2001.
Joe's original paintings are held in collections worldwide, a fact that never ceases to amaze and humble him.
This new sketchbook on this prolific painter, "Joe Jusko: Maelstrom" is available in two editions:
Signed Edition: $39.99
ISBN:978-1-4675-0474-4

CHICAGO (May 23, 2011) – Archaia Entertainment has set July 25th for the release of Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes, its first illustrated novel, through its new book trade distributor Publishers Group West (PGW).
Written by celebrated author, artist, and digital producer Andrew E.C. Gaska, and adapted from a story by Gaska, Rich Handley, Christian Berntsen and Erik Matthews, Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes recounts what happened between the scenes of the classic 1968 Twentieth Century Fox film, centering on the astronaut John Landon, Chimpanzee scientists Dr. Milo and Dr. Galen, and Gorilla Security Chief Marcus. The book contains 30 full-color paintings and another 19 black-and-white illustrations, including a cover by legendary artist Jim Steranko (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and interior art from some of the top talent in the industry, including renowned book cover painter Ken Kelly (Conan, KISS), Joe Jusko (Savage Sword of Conan, Tarzan), Sanjulian (Eerie, Vampirella), Mark Texeira (Ghost Rider, Wolverine), Leo Leibelman (Heavy Metal), Matt Busch (Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica), Brian Rood (Indiana Jones, Star Wars), Tom Scioli (Godland), David Hueso (G.I. Joe: Storm Shadow) and newcomers Dan Dussault (Critical Millennium) and Dirk Shearer (Mice Templar).
Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes marks an expansion of Archaia’s successful collaboration with Gaska, following up on his science fiction comic epic, Critical Millennium: The Dark Frontier, which has received early critical acclaim.
“It means a lot to have this project be set for release and we cannot think of a better partner to have than Archaia with their outstanding production value,” said Gaska. “It’s been a great working partnership with 20th Century Fox and an honor to contribute to this legendary franchise.”
Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes also marks Archaia’s first venture into prose books.
“We’re very excited about our first foray into prose fiction publishing, particularly being able to work with a brilliant creative talent in Drew Gaska and a storied franchise like Planet of the Apes. I’m a huge fan of the original film and Conspiracy is a great example of an author playing successfully in an established narrative canon. We are very excited to introduce this extraordinary science fiction release across the book trade and genre markets and look forward to Conspiracy emerging as one of the year’s most talked-about titles,” said Mark Smylie, CCO of Archaia.
The original Planet of the Apes was an immediate pop-culture phenomenon, spanning decades with several film and television sequels, including the 2001 remake starring Mark Wahlberg and the latest, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, starring 127 Hours star James Franco, Harry Potter’s Tom Felton and Immortals’ Freida Pinto.

Legendary Michael Golden and Joe Jusko Tour Europe
Michael Golden and Joe Jusko Headline "LEI 2010 Euro Spring Tour"!
Paris, The Netherlands, Brussels -- The Eva Ink Artist Tour for May 2010 is underway! And this year sees the bi-annual event reprising the successes of two years ago by bringing back two illustration heavy hitters for the adventure-- creator Michael Golden and illustrator Joe Jusko!
"I admire the work of both of these talents immensely," says Renee Witterstaetter of Eva Ink Artist Group, "And I'm very happy to welcome them both back on the tour. It's seldom that we invite the same creators back so soon, but the demand for Joe and Michael was high, both from the fans of their work in Europe, and from the store owners themselves!"
And it's certainly no wonder!
Artist/writer/creator Michael Golden, co-creator of the X-men's Rogue character, is known for his detailed pencil work on "The 'Nam," "Micronauts," "G.I. Joe Yearbook," and "Dr. Strange, " among much more!
Milestones in Golden's career include the co-creation of "Bucky O'Hare," which led to an animated series and toy line designed by Michael, "The Mirconauts," as well as "Spartan X" with editor Renee Witterstaetter. Currently, Golden's work can be seen with new covers on "Spiderman 1602," "Iron Man", "Heroes for Hire", "X-Men," "Demon's Regret, " "Mice Templar," and many more. In addition, Vanguard Production's extensive art book, "Excess: The Art of Michael Golden," is on a second printing, while Creator Chronicles has also recently released a two part candid DVD on Michael and his career.
Michael has served as an Editor at DC Comics as well as Senior Art Director at Marvel Comics, and has worked on scores of movie production projects, including some currently in development. His art has been the focus of gallery shows in places as diverse as Gijon and Barcelona, Spain, New York, Antwerp and Brussels, while his class on storytelling has been conducted from Spain to Brussels to Canada to The United States and most recently in China. He was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Lille, France.
Following the successful "Heroes and Villains" sketchbook" released last year, Michael's new hardcover art book "Michael Golden: MORE Heroes and Villains," has just hit the stands, and his work on the Eva Ink project "Kerry and the Scary Things," is due out in October.
Joe Jusko is undoubtedly one of the best known Fantasy, Pin-Up and Comic Artists in the world today. His career has spanned almost 30 years, starting with the sale of his first cover for Heavy Metal Magazine in 1977 at the age of 17. Since , Joe has worked for almost every major comic book publisher, producing hundreds of images for both covers and interiors.
In addition to his work at Marvel over the years, Joe has produced art for many other companies and characters, including DC Comics, Crusade Comics, Innovation Comics, Harris Comics, Wildstorm Comics, Top Cow Productions and Byron Preiss Visuals, to name just a few. His recent work includes miscellaneous cover paintings for 'The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles', 'Vampirella' , and Sheena, among others. The next project due out on to highlight Joe's amazing work is "Joe Jusko: Savage Beauty," a hardcover art book from Eva Ink Publishing.
Jusko's work has earned him myriad awards and honors, including two "Favorite Painter" Wizard Fan Awards, multiple trading card awards, a Golden Lion Award from the Burroughs Bibliophiles (previous recipients include Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo) and a Chesley Award nomination for best cover .
The LEI 2010 Euro Spring Tour includes stops at:
Paris-- Diablo Blanc Comics-- May 21st and May 22nd
The Netherlands, Breda-- Der Stripspecialist-- May 27th
Brussels-- Utopia Comics-- May 28th and May 29th
Brussels-- Ganshoren Comics Festival-- May 30th
"We look forward to seeing all of our friends at all these stops," continued Renee, "And, hey, if you are a store in Europe and would like to be on future tour itineraries, drop me an e-mail. We love to work with new people as well, and meet fans we haven't met yet!
