I Reads You Review: FAIRY TAIL, VOL. 5

Creator: Hiro Mashima; William Flanagan (translation and adaptation)
Publishing Information: Del Rey Manga, paperback, 202 pages, $10.99 (US), $12.50 CAN
Ordering Numbers: ISBN: 978-0-345-50558-3 (ISBN-13)

Rating “T for Ages 13+”

Lucy Heartfilia is a girl wizard, and her dream was to become a member of Fairy Tail, the famous wizards’ guild. Lucy met Fairy Tail member, the young fire wizard, Natsu Dragneel, and Happy, his talking, occasionally winged cat. Before long, Lucy was in Fairy Tail, wearing the guild’s brand on her right hand, and even meeting other powerful members like Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet.

As Fairy Tail, Vol. 5 opens, Lucy and friends prepare to protect a village from the impending attack by former members of the guild, Lamia Scale. During the attack, the injured Gray Fullbuster realizes that a former associate of his, Reitei Lyon, is involved with Lamia Scale, and Natsu has gone to battle Lyon. Now, the secrets of Gray’s past are about to be revealed.

Although it is published by Del Rey Manga in North American, Fairy Tail reminds me of VIZ Media Shonen Jump titles like One Piece and especially Naruto. Fairy Tail has a large cast of characters and their pasts often initiate or shape storylines (a prominent trait of Naruto). Creator Hiro Mashima (Rave Master) offers a manga that should be as popular with young male readers as the most successful Shonen Jump titles. Plus, the art is stellar. Sometimes, Fairy Tail looks like a superheroes with magic powers comic book, and I wish many of the Doctor Strange and Dr. Fate comic books were half as exciting to read as Fairy Tail.

ZombieBomb is Back

TP's "ZombieBomb!" Returns....TO FEED!

Terminal Press’ breakout hit series “ZombieBomb!” is back with its second killer issue, “ZombieBomb! The Feed.”

Rich Woodall (Johnny Raygun) and acclaimed painter Adam Miller return as co-editors on the zombie anthology book that’s been stirring up buzz between horror and comics enthusiasts alike since the title launched in March. With accolades from industry greats such as Ed McGuinness and Eric Powell, and a four-skull stamp of approval from Fangoria magazine, “ZombieBomb!” has proven to be fertile ground for the top talent that’s assembled to spin short tales of the undead in every 64-page issue.

“ZombieBomb! The Feed” also continues Terminal Press' collaboration with thrash metal legends Exodus. "Last Desires" is a featured story from writer/frontman Rob Dukes, who also penned the serial killer nightmare I AM BECOME GOD earlier this year and is a character in his band's own comic, Exodus: Death Begets Death.

"What's On The Menu?" Variant by Rich Woodall
With alternate covers from Miller and Woodall, “The Feed’s” creators also include Chris Giarrusso (Marvel, Image), Keith McCleary (Heavy Metal), Craig Rousseau (Marvel,Image), Fred Lynch (Random House, The Washington Post), Khary Randolph (Marvel, DC, The Cartoon Network) Chris Dahlen (The Onion), Loston Wallace (DC), Tony Donley, Josh Morrissette, Bryan White, Cheri Couillard, Alison Blackwell, Chuck Knigge, Robert Squier and John Gajowski.

House of Five Leaves Looking for Fifth Leaf

I read House of Five Leaves, Vol. 1

I posted a review at the Comic Book Bin (which has smart phone apps and they're FREE).

Elephantmen Volume 1 Gets a New Edition

THE ELEPHANT IS BACK IN THE ROOM!

Image Comics publishes revised and expanded ELEPHANTMEN VOL. 1

November sees a new edition of the critically acclaimed ELEPHANTMEN VOL. 1: WOUNDED ANIMALS TP.

Currently out of print, the new printing of the ELEPHANTMEN VOL. 1 trade paperback has been expanded and revised to include the series' sold out zero issue, painted by LADRÖNN, as well as an all-new sketchbook section by Moritat and the ENGLISH & MEDIA STUDIES back matter from the single issues!

The scribes behind the issues in this epic new edition include RICHARD STARKINGS, JOE CASEY (OFFICER DOWNE, Avengers: The Origin) and JOE KELLY (I KILL GIANTS, Amazing Spider-Man). In addition to LADRÖNN, artists MORITAT (The Spirit), HENRY FLINT (Judge Dredd), TOM SCIOLI (GØDLAND), DAVID HINE (THE BULLETPROOF COFFIN, Detective Comics), and CHRIS BACHALO (Sandman, Amazing Spider-Man) all lent their pencils and pens to this collection, and BOO COOK (Judge Dredd) has provided a dazzling new cover.

ELEPHANTMEN creator, Richard Starkings is overjoyed: "Revisiting our first seven issues -- EIGHT when you count the origin issue illustrated by Ladrönn -- made me proud. We've come so far, but so much of what we set out to do four years ago is perfectly encapsulated in this first volume. In addition to the new trade dress, which now matches the sleek and sexy graphics of volumes 2 and 3, we've added over 80 pages of back matter from the original, increasingly hard-to-find back issues, and my fellow countryman, BBC radio and TV personality and TURF co-creator Jonathan Ross has kindly provided a whole new introduction for us, so just about everything in this first collection feels new again."

"There really isn't another book like ELEPHANTMEN on the market, and that's something I'm exceptionally proud of," added Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. "Richard has assembled a crack team of creative talent to produce one of the most unique comic book reading experiences available, and this collection is the perfect introduction to this rich and endlessly fascinating world."

ELEPHANTMEN VOL.1: WOUNDED ANIMALS Revised and Expanded TP, a full-color 312-page trade paperback collecting issues #0-7 of the ongoing series, will be in stores November 3, 2010. The hardcover edition of VOL. 1 (JAN071927) is now available, as are ELEPHANTMEN VOL. 2: FATAL DISEASES (HC: AUG082238; TP: OCT090372) and ELEPHANTMEN VOL. 3: DANGEROUS LIAISONS (HC: FEB100355; TP: FEB108471).
