Rating “OT for Ages 16+”

Air Gear is a shonen manga created by manga-ka, Ito Ōgure, who works under the pen name, Oh!great. The series takes place in a world where the most popular sport is Air Trecks, a highly advanced form of inline skating. The series focuses on Itsuki “Ikki” Minami. A student and juvenile delinquent, he is also a prodigy at Air Trecks and may become the “Sky Keeper.” To compete with other Air Trecks teams, Ikki and his friends form their own team, Kogarasumaru.

In Air Gear, Vol. 11, Ikki becomes something of a rock star in the world of Air Trecks, but now he’s forgetting where he came from and also his friends. In a bid to move Kogarasumaru up in the rankings, Ikki challenges Team Potemkin to a fight on their home turf, Shinonome Battleship Island, an island partly made of boats. Also, a trip to Kyoto brings Kogarasumaru into conflict before and during the trip.

Air Gear is like a combination of the shonen manga, Yakitate!! Japan and Reborn! Air Gear is full of fantastic weird characters like both, and focuses on the dynamics of a gang or criminal organization – like Reborn! Like both, Air Gear is an action comedy, and creator Oh!great is good at drawing both action and comedy.

In the action scenes, the artist displays solid draftsmanship with imaginative compositions. The storytelling is a bit wild and incomprehensible, at times – the kiss of death in graphic storytelling, but here, is much less catastrophic for the narrative. He’s great at drawing objects, landscapes, cityscapes, etc. He can also warp and deform anatomy and backgrounds for the appropriate comic effect or whatever comic tone is appropriate for a particular scene.

Although I had a hard time following Air Gear and catching onto the concept, I would read this again. The idea of football played by athletes wearing inline skates or high-flying martial arts done while wearing inline skates intrigues me. Air Gear is more weird than stupid, or at least that is what a fool for shonen manga would say.

Nathan Edmondson Will Get to the Bottom of Who is Jake Ellis

I SPY
Image Comics launches new Nathan Edmondson title WHO IS JAKE ELLIS? in January 2011

Writer Nathan Edmondson made people afraid to look into the light with THE LIGHT, a sell-out five-issue miniseries drawn by Brett Weldele (The Surrogates). Now, he brings new life to the spy genre with WHO IS JAKE ELLIS?, an all-new series from Image Comics.

The first issue of JAKE ELLIS will be in stores in January 2011. Tonci Zonjic (POPGUN, The Immortal Iron Fist, Daredevil) joins Edmondson on the book, producing action-packed art and covers for the series.

"Tonci and I are bringing the idea of psychological thriller to a whole new arena," says Edmondson. "One part mystery, one part friendship, one part James Bond and Jason Bourne lovechild, and one other part sci-fi spy. You'll be asking yourself the whole ride through -- just who is Jake Ellis?"

Jon Moore is the most sought after spy-for-hire in Europe's criminal world. This is because of Jake Ellis, a man who is invisible to everyone except Moore. When a deal goes bad, the only one who can protect Moore from Europe's most dangerous criminals is Jake Ellis. No one but Moore can see Jake Ellis. But Jake Ellis can see everything.

WHO IS JAKE ELLIS? #1 (NOV100403), a 32-page, full-color comic book from Image Comics, will be in stores January 5, 2011, for $2.99. THE LIGHT VOL. 1 TP (OCT100471), a 140-page full-color graphic novel for $16.99, will be in stores December 15, 2010.

Hack/Slash One-Shot Due in January

WITH OR WITHOUT VLAD

Tim Seeley tells Vlad's origin story in HACK/SLASH: ME WITHOUT YOU one-shot from Image Comics

Cassie Hack has taken out some of the most dangerous slashers in the world. But could she have done it without the help of her enormous sidekick, Vlad? In January 2011, HACK/SLASH fans will finally find out how Cassie and Vlad became an inseparable pair!

The follow-up to the smash hit HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC miniseries, HACK/SLASH: ME WITHOUT YOU reveals the origin of comicdom's favorite hulking sidekick. Before Vlad roamed the country, battling slashers with Cassie Hack, he haunted the alleyways of Chicago as the living urban legend, the Meat Man. But even a cleaver-wielding monster gets lonely, and Vlad's quest to find out who he really is will lead him on a bloody path!

"I was so pleased with how MY FIRST MANIAC turned out," says Hack/Slash writer and creator TIM SEELEY. "Because of that and the reaction from the readers, I decided to tell a story I've been wanting to tell for a long time: the secret origin of Vlad, Cassie's monstrous partner. As with MANIAC, it'll be an accessible story both to new and old readers, with lots of unexpected twists."

HACK/SLASH: ME WITHOUT YOU OS, a 32-page, full-color comic book written by Seeley and illustrated by Daniel Leister, with covers by Leister and Ross Campbell, will be in stores January 5, 2011, for $3.50.

Catch up with the adventures of Cassie and Vlad with the following spectacular collections: HACK/SLASH OMNIBUS Vol. 1 (APR100408, $29.99) and HACK/SLASH OMNIBUS Vol. 2 (MAY100447, $29.99). HACK/SLASH OMNIBUS Vol. 3 (JUN100415, $29.99) will be in stores November 10, 2010, and HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC (S/N HC: SEP100462, $29.99; TP: $9.99) will be in stores November 17, 2010.

Shadowflame Trade Paperback Has John Byrne Cover

John Byrne Covers Shadowflame

Industry legend, John Byrne, is lending his artistic talents to the wraparound cover of the new Shadowflame trade paperback (Diamond Code: SEP10 0773) out this November.

John Byrne rose to fame in the late 70s' with his work with Chris Claremont on the Uncanny X-men. His run would last over 3 years and include the creation of fan favorite character, Kitty Pryde. His 6 year run on the Fantastic Four is considered by many to be a "2nd Golden Age." In 1986, Byrne helped DC revitalize the Superman franchise with The Man Of Steel series. In the 90s, he launched the popular creator-owned series, John Byrne's Next Men. He continues to be a presence in the industry with his work on popular licensed properties Angel and Star Trek. Arcana is proud to have him provide the cover for the new Shadowflame collection.

Shadowflame tells the story of officer Tom Wyatt. After his wife, Janice, is murdered he tried to find solace in his own grief and despair. He attempted to end his own life. Instead he found himself transported to a ship orbiting the Earth. The aliens aboard explained that he could not kill himself for he was the last of a chosen line. A family line which possessed the perfect genetic imprint to receive the "gift of power" and become a third holy man of Isht. So after hearing the story of Isht and his family, Tom agreed to take the power. In a painful ceremony he was endowed with powers that set him apart from other men. He was now a superman, capable of vast feats of strength, flight, telekinetic force bolts, and all the rewards of being a holy man. This gave him not only great powers, but a reason to live. The trade paperback collects for the first time all four issues of the series which was originally released in 2007.

Shadowflame is 135 pages, full color and has interior work by Joe Martino, Peter Palmiotti, Ian Sokoliwski, Dash Martin, Rick Buckler Jr, Naser Subashi, Johnny Lowe and Jeff Austin. It is loaded with pinups and chapter covers by Bob Layton, Mike Grell, Rudy Nebres, Andie Tong, Paul Ryan, Darren Taylor, Steven Perkins, Anthony Castrillo, Rob X. Roman, Buzz, Rob Stull, Grant Perkins, and an amazing wraparound cover by comic legend John Byrne
