Rated M/Mature

Injection is a currently ongoing comic book series published by Image Comics.  Injection is created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Declan Shalvey; the book is colored by Jordie Bellaire.  Ellis, Shalvey, and Bellaire were the creative team behind Marvel Comics' 2014 relaunch of its Moon Knight comic book, producing the first six issues.  According to publicity material for this series, Injection is a “serialized sequence of graphic novels,”  and focuses on five people who have to save the world from being too weird to support human life, a situation they apparently created.

Injection, Volume 1 opens at Sawling Hospital.  There, we meet Professor Maria Kilbride, who is being castigated by a stern older woman.  Through a flashback, we learn that Kilbride was part of something called the “Cultural Cross-Contamination Unit.”  Her colleagues were Robin Morel, a “Cunning Man” (old-timey Brit shaman) and esotericist; Simeon Winters, a British spy and strategist with MI6; Vivek Headland, a logician and ethicist; and Brigid Roth, a programmer, coder, and all-around computer chick.  How did these five individuals poison the 21st Century?  They created “Injection,” and then, they went and injected it.

At a slim 20 pages, Injection #1 was all about set-up and vague introductions.  Still, I found it intriguing, because every first issue of a Warren Ellis comic book intrigues me, even if, in the long run, the series does not pan out to the deliciousness promised by the first issue.  That rarely happens.  In the case of Moon Knight: From the Dead, the Ellis-Shalvey-Bellaire intro arc of Moon Knight, the first issue was average, but the rest of the series took off from there

Injection does not quite explode from the first issue's intriguing premise.  Rather, each issue is intriguing in its own way; put the first five issues together and you get a fabulous first act/graphic novel.  Are there people that you just like to here talk, dear reader?  Well, Injection is that comic book that you just want to sit down and read as long as you can stand it.

In a way, Injection, which touches upon multiple genres, from science fiction and techno-thriller to weird fiction and horror, is kind of like a superhero comic book.  Instead of punches, conflicts are engaged and resolved via a battle between what is known and what needs to be known.  Knowledge will save the day, and even Kilbride and her smartest guys in the room need to either recover knowledge they already have or learn something new.  That's a punch to the status quo of heroic comics – a blow mainstream American comic books need.

So yes, I am highly recommending Injection.  It's the shot in the arm your reading list needs

Book Review: Daniel Silva's "The Black Widow"

THE BLACK WIDOW
HARPER (HarperCollins Publishers) – @HarperCollins

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

AUTHOR: Daniel Silva
ISBN: 978-0-06-232022-3; hardcover (July 12, 2016)
544pp, B&W, $27.99 U.S., $34.99 CAN

The Black Widow is a 2016 novel and international thriller from American author Daniel Silva.  It is the most recent entry in Silva’s “Gabriel Allon series,” which began with The Kill Artist (2000).  Gabriel Allon is a legendary spy and killer for the Israeli secret service, and in his downtime, he restores works of art, especially paintings.  In The Black Widow, Allon grapples with an ISIS mastermind.

The troubles in The Black Widow begin in France.  First, there is the “Toulouse attack,” in which three Jewish children are brutally assaulted in what is clearly a hate crime.  Then, in the Marais district in Paris, a massive vehicle bomb destroys the “Isaac Weinberg Center for the Study of Anti-Semitism in France” (the Weinberg Center, for short).  In both attacks, the refrain “Khaybar, Khaybar, ya-Yahud” is heard.

For Gabriel Allon – the art restorer, spy, and assassin – this is personal.  Longtime friend and ally, Hannah Weinberg, was killed in the Paris attack.  Allon is poised to become the chief of Israel's secret intelligence service, but on the eve of his promotion, he is forced to take on one final mission.  The French insist that he find the ISIS mastermind behind the attack on the Weinberg Center.

They know the name the mastermind uses, Saladin, but they know nothing else about him.  They do know the name of the woman who was in Marais to lead the bombing and killing, Safia Bourihane.  She is a “Black Widow,” a woman willing to kill and even where a suicide vest for the terrorist group ISIS.  Now, Allon must find and train his own “Black Widow,” a woman who can infiltrate ISIS and discover the identity of Saladin before he can strike again.

Daniel Silva has, as of this writing, had 19 spy novels published.  I have only read the 16th (The English Girl) and this 19th, The Black Widow.  I thought both novels were thrilling, entertaining reads that were so gripping that I found them hard to put down.  Each one is filled with compelling characters that form diverse casts.  You really never know what kind of character will pop up in Silva's novels.  I won't lie and say that everyone of them is well-developed.  Most just show up to fill a need at a particular moment or moments in the novel, but they serve their purpose quite well.

Silva can be credited for his ingenious plots, but while The Black Widow has some clever twists and unexpected turns, I think that The English Girl had stronger plotting.  I would even call it cunning.  The Black Widow is an epic novel of international drama, but its plot is simply barreling towards an epic terror attack.  The speed and intensity of that barreling ebbs and flows.

The Rocky Mountain News described Silva's signature character, Gabriel Allon, to Ian Fleming's James Bond.  I don't see that at all.  For one, I view Great Britain, which Bond serves, differently than I do Israel, which Allon serves.  I see Britain as the origin place of much of the art, literature, history, cultural, myth, folklore, and entertainment that I love.  I see Israel as a mixture of the Jim Crow past of the United States with ambitions towards the apartheid past of South Africa.

Israel is a racist state that oppresses Palestinians, and often kills them regardless of gender or age, with seeming impunity.  In the fictional world of Daniel Silva, Gabriel Allon is this apartheid state's most legendary and accomplished killer, and when you call him an assassin, that just sounds like a euphemism.  James Bond is not an assassin or killer; he is a secret agent with a license to kill.

Three and half years ago, I did enjoy the summer potboiler fun of The English Girl.  I just had some winter reading fun with The Black Widow.  Daniel Silva is an accomplished novelist, probably born with talent to fabricate thrillers.  I simply have a hard time buying in completely to the mission and purpose of his literary star, Gabriel Allon.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: Legendary Edition - Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: LEGENDARY EDITION (VOL. 2) – ORACLE OF SEASONS/ORACLE OF AGES
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia

MANGAKA: Akira Himekawa
TRANSLATION: John Werry, Honyaku Center, Inc.
ENGLISH ADAPTATION: Steve “Stan!” Brown
LETTERS: John Hunt
EDITORS: Mike Montesa; Joel Enos
ISBN: 978-1-4215-8960-2; paperback (January 2017); Rated “A” for “All Ages”
404pp, B&W with some color, $17.99 U.S., $24.99 CAN, £12.99 U.K.

The Legend of Zelda is a high-fantasy themed action-adventure video game series published by Nintendo.  Since 1986, Nintendo has published over 20 Zelda games and spin-offs.  For two decades, Nintendo has also officially endorsed and commissioned manga adaptations of The Legend of Zelda.  The Legend of Zelda revolves around Link, a brave knight/warrior, and Princess Zelda of Hyrule, who guides, encourages, instructs, and summons Link to battle evil.

The first Zelda comic was published in 1992, a full-color comic, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which was loosely based on a 1991 game of the same title.  Mangaka Akira Himekawa has also produced Legend of Zelda manga based on video games.  Himekawa created a multi-chapter serial for each of two Zelda video games, Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, games that were first released in Japan around 2001.  VIZ Media reprinted each serial in a graphic novel edition back in 2009.

Now, VIZ has returned these two graphic novels to print in an oversized paperback edition, The Legend of Zelda: Legendary Edition – Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages.  In Oracle of Seasons, we are introduced to Link who has been raised by his grandmother and his grandfather.  The grandfather was formerly a brave knight of Hyrule, and that is what he wants Link to be.

Although he wants to chart his own destiny, Link leaves home to participate in a tournament of knights, but he ends up in the land of Holodrum where meets Din the Dancer.  Din turns out to be the Oracle of Seasons, who is being hunted by Onox, General of Darkness.  If Onox can capture Din, he will also have possession of the powerful relic, the Rod of Seasons.  Of course, Link, with the help of brave allies, must stop him.

In Oracle of Ages, Link gets caught up in the quest to find Nayru, the Oracle of AgesVeran, the sorceress of shadows, also wants Nayru, and eventually takes possession of her body.  Veran then travels through time, deep into the past of the land of Labrynna, where she uses her dark influence to build a tower that shall reach the skies.  Now, Link and someone with a surprising connection to him must stop her, a long and arduous campaign of many twists and turns.

As I have said before, I am not sure if I ever realized that there were comics and manga based on The Legend of Zelda, although I was aware of the 1989 American animated television miniseries.  Apparently, there are lots and lots of Zelda comics.

If the rest of these comics are like The Legend of Zelda: Legendary Edition – Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages, I want more.  These two stories are even better than the colorful (but kind of simplistic) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past   Oracles of Seasons and Oracle of Ages are some of the most enjoyable all-ages manga that I have ever read.

I like the clean drawing style of the art, which makes for clear storytelling.  There are some shifts in setting – by either time or region – that seem arbitrary and contrived, but for the most part, this straight-forward quest fantasy and epic adventure proves to be delightful.  This isn't “Game of Thrones” or Lord of the Rings, but Akira Himekawa isn't wary of offering a bit of darkness and character drama to the story for the sake of making the narrative stick with the readers.
